They work to build emotional connections quickly, frequently calling their victims "wife" or "husband" early in the conversation to create a false sense of intimacy. Once a bond is formed, they shift communication to private messaging apps like Snapchat or Signal, where their activities are harder to track and report. After gaining trust, the scammer—pretending to be Derek Lorusso—eventually asks for money, citing fabricated emergencies, investment opportunities in gold or cryptocurrency, or requests for prepaid cards. In many cases, they emotionally manipulate victims with guilt, fake promises, or even veiled threats to keep them engaged and under control.
